About Me

Finding Arizona

I am a 31 year old triathlete and mountain bike racer living in Scottsdale, AZ. Born and raised in St. Mary’s County, MD – aka – The County, I relocated to Scottsdale in February 2006 along with my wife, Amy, and dog, Duncan. Having come from an area surrounded by the water, I never would’ve pictured myself living in the desert. However, a love for the outdoors and an interest in becoming more involved in racing led me to pursue a move out west. In early 2006, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to move to Arizona. I went on a trail run at McDowell Mountain Park’s competitive track and the scenery was overwhelming. I knew that I had landed in the right place. It also doesn’t hurt any that my wife and I are extremely biased towards warmer weather -the dog – not so much.

Swimming, Biking and Running

I’m one of those dorks who really used to look forward to the test in middle school phys ed class where they make you do the mile run as fast as you can. I played lacrosse in high school and college but couldn't play on club teams aftwerwards due to my work schedule. I found mountain biking and knew it was a sport I could get into.

At the end of 2005, I decided I was going to try do get into triathlons. A friend had done Xterra Richmond a few years back and it really interested me because I like mountain biking and trail running much more than on the road. I enlisted the help of Carmichael Training Systems, was assigned a great coach and the training began.

My first Xterra triathlon was the 2006 AZ Xtreme at Saguaro Lake in Mesa, AZ. This is one of the most beautiful run courses I’ve seen in Xterra racing. Participants will have a tough time keeping their eyes on the trail! Since then, I’ve competed in 11 off-road triathlons (9 of which were Xterra) and 9 mountain bike races. Highlights were qualifying for the USA Nationals race and the World Championships race for Xterra 2007.
